Do most riding stables allow you to ride their horses anytime?

I am going to begin riding lessons, but i don’t have a horse of my own, I will be using one of theirs. I was just wondering will it be likely that on days when i don’t have lessons will i be allowed to come and ride horses?

If you think about it in the context of a business, then most stables do not allow you to ride at any time.

- Riding schools/stables make their money from people riding their horses. So every unpaid ride is costing them money and not making it. Extra feed, shoes and general wear on the horses.

- Horses usually have a heavy work load already. It is important to have horses sufficiently rested between lessons and to keep them fresh. On of the most common things in riding schools/stables is that the horses become sour from over use.

- Insurance and Liability become a major issue. The stables are responsible for you the moment you step onto their property. So particularly in the beginning they would not be keen to let you unsupervised on the property.

Perhaps leasing a horse after you begin your lessons and learn the ropes would be an option. There are all types of lease terms available, from full time access and riding, to part time share arrangements.

Once you are a proficient handler and rider it is "possible" that the owner/manager may allow you to work at the stables and your payment would be more riding time. They may even allow you to ride an unused horse or help with exercise.

But this is normally reserved for experienced people and at stables who have the "need" for extra help. Small stables are less likely to need people cleaning stables and helping out.

Pick your riding stables by the quality of the instructors, horses and facilities. Once you find a nice place that will teach you correctly then the rest will follow.

why do women have to ride side saddle sometimes when riding a horse?

I never really understood that one

it used to be considered lewd behavior if a woman was to ride astride a horse (with a leg on each side), not only would her legs be on each side of the animal but she would have to hike up her dress to do so! it was however an improvement over the original thinking that "decent" women and ladies should not ever even ride on a horse at all.. they were supposed to ride in a carriage or cart, not on the actual animal.

Well, from your list I would select Thoroughbred as the #1 most likely to be a talented English mount, but any horse if it has the proper, consistant training and miles can show potential there. Nothing against them, but I haven’t seen a large amount of successful Appaloosa English horses, but thats not to say they can’t….maybe thats more of a shot against the people working with them, idk. I would think Dutch Warmbloods, hanoverians, Trakehners and Oldenburgs would be really good English horses, but as for me in real life most of the horses I have ridden are Quarter Horses or Appendix’s, like my horse. They seem to have perfect disposition for English.

How do I balance horse with school?

HI, I’m a 14 year old boy who rides horses nonstop
I ride both western and english and I board a horse of my own at a stable in Western NY. My problem is I get caught up into horses so much my school work falls way behind… I don’t wanna stop riding completely because i’ve worked so hard just to keep my mare and, to keep riding. So if you have any tips,comments,advice,etc please tell me i need all the help i can get.

I made it threw highschool fine with my horse (as well as showing rabbits for 4-H and ARBA). one tip don’t go to the barn every day of the week say tues and thurs concentrate on hw. first thing friday night do your hw so u don’t worry about it over the weekend. get in a routine, school, barn, dinner, then hw before anything else.

Western Horseback to English riding HELP!?

So I ride western style and I ride a lesson horse named Abby she’s a mustang mare. I’m not sure if shes had english experience. Do mustangs do good at English style riding? because I want to start jumping but I cant unless Im going english and I don’t want to leave abby after I finally found a horse that fits me. I went through several horses to find the right one. So I have no Idea what to do! HELP!
I dont have any Pictures of Abby, She is dark bay with black feathers on her Fetlocks. Shes very sweet and listens very well.

Just get a trainer. No one will be able to hold your hand through this without a lot of videos of your horse as well as coming and giving you lessons in person. Potential in an event is determined by conformation, so post some pictures. I wish that all of the people that ask these general questions would just go through and read all of the other questions about this topic. I’m sick of all these repeats.
