So I ride western style and I ride a lesson horse named Abby she’s a mustang mare. I’m not sure if shes had english experience. Do mustangs do good at English style riding? because I want to start jumping but I cant unless Im going english and I don’t want to leave abby after I finally found a horse that fits me. I went through several horses to find the right one. So I have no Idea what to do! HELP!
I dont have any Pictures of Abby, She is dark bay with black feathers on her Fetlocks. Shes very sweet and listens very well.
Heres a link to the Facility I ride at: http://web.me.com/riverbottomstables/Site/Home.html look under lesson horses and find the name Abby theres a pic right next to it of her.
Just get a trainer. No one will be able to hold your hand through this without a lot of videos of your horse as well as coming and giving you lessons in person. Potential in an event is determined by conformation, so post some pictures. I wish that all of the people that ask these general questions would just go through and read all of the other questions about this topic. I’m sick of all these repeats.
*Edit: Sorry if I sound mean but I’m in a very crabby/sarcastic mood tonight. Not a good night to answer questions really.

I started learning to horseback ride in May, and I absolutely love it. I’m trying to decide whether to learn English or Western saddle. I’ve tried both English and Western, but to be honest I can’t tell the difference. I always post, even on Western, because that’s how my instructor teaches it…but I like to post anyway, and I have good rhythm. So what are the differences between English and Western saddle? Anything besides the shape of the saddle?
If Memory serves me correctly, western saddles have a horn and large padded seat with a slight tail and are much larger than the english. English saddles have no horn or rear pad and the stirrups are made to be for you as the rider to be able to stand up.

Should i do english or western? I have gone to camp and stuff like that so i have ridden horses before. I have ridden both styles but only remember western. Which is easier? I want to start horseback riding classes but i dont know which style to try.
If you do not mind the harder one,, do English,,
It’s harder, but a bit more to it, and most western riders find it hard to ride English
But English riders can do both ,,
have fun

I am looking for either good websites or books (please, ones that you know and trust, not that you just now googled) regarding basic horseback riding form and vocabulary. I rode when I was younger for about seven years, and would like to do some research before picking it up again. I rode western then, but am open to information on english as well.
Hunter/Jumper is right. Horseback Riding for Dummies is an excellent little refresher! I still refer back to it when I cannot figure something out. Another resource I really like is Horse Channel.com. It is a very friendly community of horse lovers that is getting pretty popular. You can ask questions on the forum or read articles on specific training techniques. It would be a really good refresher to just read the articles and maybe you will remember some stuff. Okay and for the last one…Get Young Rider magazine. We get it at our barn and I read some of the articles for ideas to teach. It has informative very descriptive and informative articles. Really any book about horseback riding could give you some tips to get back into it. Good luck, and e-mail me if you need to find a riding stable in your area..I know lots of them!

Which would be better for a 7-8 year old girl who is just starting?????
Start riding Western. Once she builds up some leg muscles let her try out English. Her trainer will know when she is strong enough and experienced enough. Western will give her the horn on the saddle to hold on to just in case and it will be easier on the legs since she is just 7-8. In English, you need to keep your seat on your horse with your leg muscles and post when you trot. In simpler words, more of a leg workout!

Five friends and I are going on a day-long horseback riding trip. It is western riding. It will be hot during the day but really chilly as night sets in. Any ideas? Thanks!
Depends what you have. No matter what wear long pants. You just have to! You can wear jeans or invest in a pair of riding pants (they’re for english but it doesnt really matter). For shoes, you can either wear tennis shoes or what works a lot better is riding boots. Cowboy boots are expensive but at a horse tack store, you can find cheaper boots that aren’t cowboy style. I would wear a T-shirt (no tanktops- you’ll get stratched by branches and eaten by bugs) and maybe wrap a sweatshirt around your waist and sit on it for later in the night. For sure, wear a helmet! Have fun! I’m jealous
It sounds awesome!

i know i asked this before
i’m not going to give you a thumbs down or up if u prefer one over the other. i’m just wondering
ok um barrel racer lover…i wasn’t saying english versus western. i wuz seeing which is more popular and why and whatever. i don’t have a favorite either, i’m not those ppl who say OH ENGLISH IS SO MUCH BETTER or western is better or whatever. no. don’t judge before you get to know why i REALLY asked the question.
I prefer english,
because I can jump and in a western saddle you can’t do that, But I do ride western when I go on trail rides.

what do you preffer english or western?
and do you have to learn western first? cause thats what i heard but i want to learn english .. ?
lol i found a stable near me that teaches both english and western thats why im askin
ill prolly take english cuz i really want to do dressage/jumping when i get goood
I grew up around western riders. I disliked it so much that I always rode my horse bareback instead of using the western saddle! Now I get to ride english and it just comes more natural to me. But in the winter at my barn we all ride bareback to keep our legs and butts more warm! My barn is mostly english with a few stray western riders. We even trail ride english.
Its 2 totally different ways of riding, so it matters which one you want to do, not which one to do first. Try both for a while if your not sure.
I was also in a fun show today and won the walk/trot Dressage! It was my first time showing dressage, and on a horse I rarely ride, and have never practiced my test on. It was easy though, because it was an outdoor show, and was raining all day. So I had little competition. My friends came in 2nd and 3rd.
