I never really understood that one

it used to be considered lewd behavior if a woman was to ride astride a horse (with a leg on each side), not only would her legs be on each side of the animal but she would have to hike up her dress to do so! it was however an improvement over the original thinking that "decent" women and ladies should not ever even ride on a horse at all.. they were supposed to ride in a carriage or cart, not on the actual animal.

Trakehner
Irish Draught
Appaloosa
Canadian Horse
Canadian Sport Horse
Thoroughbred
Shagya Arabian
Westfalen/Westphalian
Hackney Horse
Dutch Warmblood
Hanoverian
Holsteiner
Hungarian Horse
Oldenburg
Selle Francias

Help!!!!
By the way, im not looking for a certain breed horse to buy, im just wondering!

Well, from your list I would select Thoroughbred as the #1 most likely to be a talented English mount, but any horse if it has the proper, consistant training and miles can show potential there. Nothing against them, but I haven’t seen a large amount of successful Appaloosa English horses, but thats not to say they can’t….maybe thats more of a shot against the people working with them, idk. I would think Dutch Warmbloods, hanoverians, Trakehners and Oldenburgs would be really good English horses, but as for me in real life most of the horses I have ridden are Quarter Horses or Appendix’s, like my horse. They seem to have perfect disposition for English.

Not the jughead Widmore from the late 1950s, but the horseback-riding Widmore from the late 1970s, he of the flowing, brunet hair.

According to the info at lost.about.com, Charles Widmore is Portrayed by: Alan Dale.

The "younger" version of Charles Widmore in Season 5 is played by David S. Lee.

HI, I’m a 14 year old boy who rides horses nonstop :)
I ride both western and english and I board a horse of my own at a stable in Western NY. My problem is I get caught up into horses so much my school work falls way behind… I don’t wanna stop riding completely because i’ve worked so hard just to keep my mare and, to keep riding. So if you have any tips, comments, advice, etc please tell me i need all the help i can get.

Thank You!

I made it threw highschool fine with my horse (as well as showing rabbits for 4-H and ARBA). one tip don’t go to the barn every day of the week say tues and thurs concentrate on hw. first thing friday night do your hw so u don’t worry about it over the weekend. get in a routine, school, barn, dinner, then hw before anything else.

So I ride western style and I ride a lesson horse named Abby she’s a mustang mare. I’m not sure if shes had english experience. Do mustangs do good at English style riding? because I want to start jumping but I cant unless Im going english and I don’t want to leave abby after I finally found a horse that fits me. I went through several horses to find the right one. So I have no Idea what to do! HELP!
I dont have any Pictures of Abby, She is dark bay with black feathers on her Fetlocks. Shes very sweet and listens very well.
Heres a link to the Facility I ride at: http://web.me.com/riverbottomstables/Site/Home.html look under lesson horses and find the name Abby theres a pic right next to it of her.

Just get a trainer. No one will be able to hold your hand through this without a lot of videos of your horse as well as coming and giving you lessons in person. Potential in an event is determined by conformation, so post some pictures. I wish that all of the people that ask these general questions would just go through and read all of the other questions about this topic. I’m sick of all these repeats.

*Edit: Sorry if I sound mean but I’m in a very crabby/sarcastic mood tonight. Not a good night to answer questions really.

well i just started horse back riding lessons and my trainer told me to buy gloves, helmet and boots. but not long boots ( or field boots)because you only really need them for show and she said to hold off on that. she also said to buy paddock boots. so i was wandering if i should buy some breeches to and chaps so when i wear my breeches they won’t get torn up. i was wandering too if there is anything else i need to buy and if so please tell me. also here is the link to the breeches, paddock boots, and chaps too look and review the price, type, and quality and tell me if they are a good deal and will work well…. thanks and bye

breeches- http://www.doversaddlery.com/product.asp?pn=KA-35388

paddock boots- http://www.doversaddlery.com/product.asp?pn=KA-38505

half chaps- http://www.doversaddlery.com/product.asp?pn=KA-35317

thanks and bye!!!

Instead of wearing breeches for lessons, i wear practice tights. Breeches in my opinion are not always so comfy. The practice riding pants are more comfortable, usually cheaper, and they are easy to replace. Arait is a good brand for boots, but if you are just starting then you may just want to go with a cheaper brand. Half chaps are a great idea. They are soo comfortable, and they give you a better grip while riding. I wear The Elite brand for half chaps and i love them…Have fun riding!!

I’m thinking of taking horseback riding lessons. I’m 16 almost 17 and I’m a bit worried that I’m too old to start? I don’t know… I’ve always loved horses and I regret not taking lessons as a young child.

Can you tell me what it’s like taking lessons? Are they usually group lessons or private? Group lessons are cheaper, right? And how much do lessons usually cost?

Is horseback riding overall a fun sport, or is it stressful? Thanks for all of your help!

You’re not at all too old to start; there are TONS of people who don’t start riding until they’re in their 30’s or 40’s. There’s no set age limit on when you can start to learn how to ride; it’s timeless. :]

As for what lessons are like; it depends on what style you’re riding. English or Western. Both are amazing disciplines, with their challenges and difficulties. With Western, you’re able to do barrel racing, roping, Western pleasure, and tons of other things (that I can’t think of off the top of my head :P ). As for English, there’s jumping, dressage, English pleasure, and, again, tons of others. Both disciplines trail ride as well.

As for group or private, that’s up to you. Group lessons are usually cheaper, yes, but but usually not by much. At my barn, and at some of the other barns I’ve been to in my area, the group lessons were all around $40, and the privates were all around $45. I would recommend, however, that you start off with a few private lessons. That way, as you’re learning the basics and working on your form, cues, etc, you have one-on-one time with the instructor, and they can focus entirely on you. That way, when you do start taking group lessons, you’re ready for it, and not left wondering what’s going on. To sum it up, privates for the first few lessons or so is a good way to make sure you have the basics and such down before going into a group setting.

Overall, it’s a very fun sport. Of course, like any sport, it has it’s stressful moments (the horse won’t listen, something else is going on, etc), but most often those are few and far between. It’s…well, there’s really no words to describe it that can give it justice. When you ride, it feels like you’re flying, like you’re one with the horse, and that it’s just the two of you racing through time. :]

Have fun!
