Exciting Holidays

November 24, 2009

Activity holidays a great way to spice up your vacation, so if you are stuck for ideas then why not try one of these:

SCUBA-DIVING

Scuba-diving is one of the fastest-growing water sports in the world. The Maldives are acknowledged as one the world’s greatest dive destinations, as are many of the Red Sea resorts such as Sharm el Sheikh, Hurghada and Taba. Diving in the Red Sea is popular due to its amazing underwater scenery with coral gardens, deep blue canyons and famous wrecks.

SKIING

Bulgaria is a perfect destination to try out skiing and snowboarding for the first time as it is really good value and tuition is cheap. For more experienced skiers, Charmonix in France or St Anton in Austria may prove more testing, while further afield, Jackson Hole in USA and Colorado’s Aspen boast some of the most challenging ski terrain in the world.

HIKING

As well as a tough pair of boots you’ll often need an equally tough mentality. The Canary Islands are ideal for discovering on foot. Whether you decide to venture to the summit of Mount Teide on Tenerife or simply stroll through the lush tropical greenery on La Palma you are sure to enjoy a fascinating experience.

SAFARI

Kenya is undeniably the best known destination for safari holidays. Hosting some of the most spectacular and varying wildlife in the world, Kenya features mountainous rainforests and large game reserves which take in lion, cheetah, elephant, and an abundance of bird life.

HORSE RIDING

Horse riding holidays in many destinations can combine both daily riding with time to relax on the beach. In Greece, the unspoilt Pelion Peninsula on the east coast is an excellent riding resort. Italy is famous for good horses, beautiful landscapes, delicious food and plentiful wine, so Tuscany is an ideal location for a horse riding holiday with several challenging long-distance rides from village to village.

WHITE WATER RAFTING

A fun family activity, rafting can take in spectacular scenery and the natural beauty of surrounding areas, as well as providing a natural roller-coaster ride through ferocious mountain rivers. White-water rafting in Dalaman, Turkey is one of the most exciting holiday experiences and is perfect for active thrill seekers. The Dalaman River is rated as one of the top rafting destinations in the world, but don’t worry – professionals will guide you every step of the way for an unforgettable adventure.

SAILING

Whether you sail on your own or opt for luxury crewed sailing, whereby a crew takes care of everything for you, there is no other activity to match it. With its tropical islands, the Caribbean is a particular favourite sailing holiday destination. In the Mediterranean, the Greek islands dominate the sailing scene with the Ionian Islands. Turkey’s Lycian Coast is also very popular.

GOLF

Golf holidays are an increasingly popular way of exploring the world while playing some of the most exciting golf courses on the planet. The all-year-round sunny mild climate of the Canary Islands and Florida make golf holidays an ideal break. Spain offers famous courses like Valderama and plenty of cheap golf holidays in Catalonia and the Costa Brava. Golf holidays are particularly popular on the Costa del Sol (nicknamed the Costa del Golf!), which has the biggest concentration of courses in Europe and of course offers plenty of options for the 19th hole!

CYCLING

Leaving your troubles behind on a cycling holidays is a refreshing and liberating experience. The concept of being free to go where you want is very luring to many cyclists. Of course, you can follow established routes which are littered throughout Spain, Italy, Austria, Switzerland and – a relative newcomer – Croatia, which boasts ancient roads criss-crossing through the stunning countryside.

WINDSURFING

With consistently reliable winds, the Canary Islands are a favourite windsurf destination, particularly on Lanzarote and Gran Canaria. In southern Spain Tarifa, is for the more experienced windsurfers, while Hurghada on the Red Sea coast boasts equally powerful year-round conditions. Further afield, Aruba and Barbados provides perfect conditions for windsurfing.

Some people have a love for the Wild West. Although it’s not so “wild” anymore, there is a certain romance
to the whole cowboy image. Horses, campfires, riding the range – some people wish they could experience life the way it used to be. Now, you can. Many families are choosing to take adventure vacations to dude ranches in the U.S. and elsewhere. On these vacations, they can live out their dreams of being a cowboy in the old West.

Once you have decided that you want to go to a Dude Ranch, there are several more decisions and plans that you have to make before you wind up there. Here are a few to help you get started in your quest of becoming a cowboy for awhile.

First, decide what is important to you. Do you want to ride horses and round up the cows? Do you mind sleep in a cabin or even out under the stars occasionally? Or are you more the type of person that would rather be pampered, stay in rough-looking but five star quality cabins and have a five course meal at night? If you are taking your children, would you prefer to spend the days together doing family activities, or would you rather have adult and children’s activities separate, only meeting for meals throughout the day?

Once you have decided the answer to these questions, you’ll have to decide which dude ranch you’d rather stay at. What’s most appealing? At traditional dude ranches riding is the main focus and there’s usually a minimum stay, often a week in the summer. These are popular with families, but confirm other kids will be there at the same time. The higher-end ranches have nicer lodging, supervised kids programs and possibly a spa. At a working dude ranch you’ll help with the livestock. Guest ranches offer riding plus activities such as fly fishing and mountain biking.

Be very specific when asking about the activities. For horseback riding, for example, will you be on the same horse each day, and be expected to feed, brush and care for the horse? Will you be taught how to ride if you don’t know how? Are there two-hour rides, full-day rides, or overnight rides? Are riders split into groups according to ability?

Find out what’s included in the package price. Some offer all activities, meals and boarding for one set fee. Others are a la carte. Confirm if you’ll be paying up front, how you should pay at the end for a la carte, and what credit cards are accepted.
Although you should definitely check with the specific ranch you are visiting, you should always be prepared to bring a few staples along. These would include heeled boots, for riding, a brimmed hat with a strap to keep the sun out of your face, jeans and long-sleeved shirts, leather gloves if you plan to ride all day, and a hand sanitizer, for keeping your hands clean after dealing with the horses. Of course, bandanas are a requirement of all cowboys, as well.

So you have now decided for sure what type of ranch you want, and you are half-way there to being packed. Now you just need to find the right one for you. The Dude Ranchers Association lists over 100 ranches in the Western United States, while the Colorado Dude & Guest Ranch Association focuses on choices in that state. Keep in mind, there are also dude ranches in other countries. You’ll just have to do your homework to find the perfect one for you and your family.

Last night, I dreamt that I was riding a saddled horse down the street, and all of a sudden, it started spinning around, and I fell off and it landed on top of me. I was not hurt, but my friend pulled it off me and it was just laying on the ground almost dead. What does this mean?

Well it means you are immune to all horse related deaths

My mothers dream has always been to ride a horse on the beach. I’d love to make that dream come true for her, but I can’t seem to find anywhere she can do that.
It would be nice if it was in the New England area, but it doesnt have to be.
Please if you know of a place let me know!

On Block Island there is a company called Rustic Rides that offers the option of a horse ride on the beach.

If there’s anyone who is around western PA and you need to board horses or you need lessons email me!!!! (I am not a certified riding instructor, but I have been riding for years) mgnslife@gmail.com

Put out signs for lessons and boarding. Hang a flyer in the tack shop and feed store. The biggest thing I think is to have your number listed in the yellow pages. If you’re good at websites, make a simple website – we have lots of people who run internet searches for barns in the area and that’s how they find us.

Make sure your facilities are properly set up for boarding. You need to have a business license and liability insurance, among other things. Good luck and have fun!
