In today’s Mahalo Daily, Leah goes to visit Malibu Riders, a company that provides horseback riding tours of trails around the Malibu hills, and gets tips on how to correctly saddle, mount, ride, and demount a horse. Leah also found out about how to clean a horse’s shoe, what horses like to eat, and got a chance to push her horse into a gentle trot.

I've never taken horseback riding lessons so I've learned to ride through many trail rides. I don't really know how to balance right without holding onto the horn while the horse is in a trot or lope. Is there any tips you'd recommend so I can ride with both hands on the reins? I'm going horseback riding this Thursday so hopefully I can try them out. :)

you definitely need to be able to ride without holding onto the horse, use your legs, squeeze them against the horse at your knee to grip the horse, just don't squeeze too hard as this can sometimes make the horse go faster, you just need to practice without the horn, when i am helping someone learn to ride that doesn't know how, i do not let them hold the horn, when you learn to balance by holding the horn, you are enabling yourself, if you absolutely need to grab the horn to regain balance than go for it, but try to ride as much of your ride without using the horn

Im looking into taking horseback riding lessons one place offers both English and Western Style, the other place, that looks more interesting, only offers English style, thats why Im interested in the difference. Also I couldn't fit this into the question area, What is dressage and what is Hunt seat? I looked them both up online, but I dont understand too much of horseback riding information, so I don't quite understand what both are and the difference for that as well. Thanks in advance for helping.

There are many differences between english and western riding styles, the most obvious being the difference in tack. Tack, which encompases the sadddle and bridle, as well as any other “gear” the horse might wear, differs signifigantly between western and english. If you were to ride western, you would use a western saddle, which has a horn (the thing in the front of the saddle that sticks up), and a much deeper wider seat. On the other hand, if you were to ride english, you would use an english saddle, which has no horn, and flatter, shallower seat. Western riders are often western pleasure riders (which is a different riding style within western, like barrel racing or pole bending) which calls for the horse to have a very lopey sittable gait and carry their head very low. The rider is suppposed to make the ride look relaxed, controlled, and give the illusion of easyness. English style, which i ride, is more of a formal, riding style that calls for controll, and obedience. Technically, english riding can be more detail oriented, and there are more technical things that the rider must know, such as controll and use of their legs, seat, and hands. However, just like western, “english” only names the discipline one rides and not the type ie. hunter, jumper, eventer, or equitation. As for your other question, dresage is another style of english riding that takes the technicality of riding even higer, and requires its participants to be able to complete complex manuvers on the flat. Hunt seat applies to english riding also, and is the way that the rider uses her seat, hands, and legs together often while jumping over obstacles. It was meant to mimic the style of riding that fox hunters displayed. I appoligize for the lenghty explanation, but i hope it helps :)

My questions!
1) is it better to do indivisiual or group lessons?
2) I have a weight "Issue" and i am not sure if i can get up and down off the horses will i hurt their back?
3) what a typical price for horse back riding lessons for an hour?

:D well please feel free to give ANY aidvise!!!

thanks!

:D

1) I took both before. Personally, group lessons are embarrassing to me. Though you can learn from others mistakes.
2)No they have the right horse for everybody, as long as you sit in the correct place it will be fine
3)It ranges

Goodluck and definatly take it!

Like every sport, horse riding has a certain amount of clothing that comes with it to help in the experience. There are chaps, struts, crops, saddles, specialized pants and shoes….
