My friend said I’m crazy. Yeah, I thought so. Riding without saddle, halter and stirrup is pretty dangerous but a nice experience.

I KNOW there is no audio. Blame youtube, some copywright dispute on the last song i used. I thought it was better to have it with no sounds then not at all. ;)

Please Note: This is not just a “showjumping” video, there are about 5 other videos for XC, Dressage, Western and even racing. Stop commenting me saying “why did you only just use showjumping” or “dressage is more of a sport then showjumping.”

I'm a high school sophomore and I've recently begun looking at colleges. I've been riding horses for over a decade, however, I have never owned a horse save for a short year-long half-lease. Mostly, my lessons more involve schooling on barn-owned horses or 'catch-riding,' in a way, horses belonging to the other riders at my barn. I've had a wide variety of riding experience on all types of horses, and a small amount of showing which was very successful.
I focus mainly in hunter/jumpers and equitation. Officially, I am a hunter/jumper rider, but my trainer has a large focus in our equitation and I have also trained on occasion using dressage.

I've thought about majoring in Equine Studies or Equine Sciences, however, it's a pretty well-known fact that those majors don't mean anything when compared to real-life experience.

What I'd like to know has more to deal with riding programs: IHSA? Varsity equestrian? What schools can get me the most riding experience with or without an equestrian major? Honestly, I refuse to give it up, and the conclusion is that any sort of school with a riding program and preferably some riding classes and a show program is much more effective than paying for board, lessons, show fees, leases, etc. all on my own.

Majors don't matter – I'm most likely majoring in English. Location is also not a preference, anywhere in the United States, although overseas is not ruled out.

But in a nutshell: Best colleges, with riding programs, regardless of an equine major – with or without will do.

Thank you!

West Virginia believe it or not has a great riding program. Great horses and ponies and a fun barn. I rode there for 2 years. It's much more affordable then other schools, plenty of showing, and lots of fundraisers and field trips (haunted house, football games, formal). They have been to Zones the last three years and Nationals last year. Look up WVUET. That should have most of the info you need. They also get credits for riding and there are also several interesting classes at Campus. I got to go to Kentucky and ride and got 3 credits for a 3 day trip.

My horse is 20 and i was wondering if there are any competitions i could enter for western riding. Is there such a thing as western showing that is kinda like dressage for english?

You can show any horse in western, age or breed doesn't matter. (I placed in western pleasure on a trakehner!)

At some shows around here we have something called Open Reining Horsemanship. It's like beginner reining/western pleasure. Reining is the western equivalent of dressage. They don't have ORH at most shows, but…yeah. It's lead changes, spins, collected/extended gaits, stops, rollbacks, etc.

If you can't find a beginner reining show (even the beginner classes usually take an experienced horse) try western pleasure and horsemanship. Horsemanship has patterns that are kind of like reining or dressage. Turning on haunches, loping from the walk, etc.

Find a trainer/riding instructor and have them help you look. They will be more familiar with shows and clubs in your area.
